A TRANSPORT group is set to hold a rally today to seek government intervention in bringing down the prices of basic commodities.
George San Mateo, national president of the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston), said they will stage a protest rally in front of the head office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Makati City.
Jeepney drivers who are members of Piston will assemble in front of the National Housing Authority (NHA) building in Quezon City before proceeding to Makati City.
“Drivers will demand that government also bring down prices of basic commodities and basic services in line with the succeeding oil price decreases,” San Mateo said.
He noted that a reduction in the prices of basic goods will offset the income lost by drivers as a result of the P1 jeepney fare rollback implemented last week due to successive oil price rollbacks.
Oil companies on Sunday again slashed the prices of oil products due to lower crude prices in the world market.
Big-time players Pilipinas Shell, Petron Corp. and Chevron Philippines (Caltex) as well as independent firms Phoenix Petroleum, PTT Philippines and Seaoil reduced gasoline prices by P1.75 per liter while Eastern Petroleum reduced its gasoline price by P1.90 per liter. The oil firms also slashed the price of diesel by P1.55 per liter, except for Eastern Petroleum which implemented a P1.60 price rollback.
Shell, Petron, Chevron and Seaoil also slashed the price of kerosene by P1.80 per liter.
Last week, oil companies whittled down prices of petroleum products by as much as P2.25 per liter for diesel, which is used by public jeepneys.
But San Mateo said the recent price adjustment is not enough, adding that they will also ask for bigger oil price rollback.
