Prime suspect in killing of Cagayan forestry expert falls

TUGUEGARAO CITY: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has arrested on Thursday the prime suspect in the killing of a forest specialist assigned in Sanchez Mira town, Cagayan.

Lawyer Rodrigo de Gracia, PNP police regional director, identified the suspect as Adorable Caligan, 28, jobless, of Claveria, Cagayan.

Forest specialist Maliania Dirain, then officer in charge of Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, was shot inside her office.

Reports said that in the evening of February 7, 2012, Dirain was at the Cenro Office in Centro 2, Sanchez Mira, Cagayan to meet somebody.

And while Dirain was with the office janitor Isaias Cereniado, the suspect entered and shot her several times.

Reports also said that Cereniado was also shot but not hit and was able to escape.

De Gracia said he believes the suspect may have been hired only to kill the victim and that the motive for the killing may not be connected with illegal logging.

Reports said the suspect is a brother to a suspected gun-for-hire who was arrested in Claveria, Cagayan.

But Caligan denied any involvement in the killing and knows nothing about gun-for-hire activities.

The suspect was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest for the crime of murder issued by Judge Francisco Donato of Regional Trial Court Branch 12 in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, with no bail recommended.

De Gracia said Caligan was identified via closed-circuit television and was corroborated by two female whose identity is withheld for security reasons.

Police Chief Insp. Pilarto Mallillin, San Mateo town police chief, said Caligan was arrested at Sitio Tappa, Villa Concepcion in Cauayan City at 6:30 a.m.

Mallillin said the suspect is now turned over to the Cagayan police for custody and proper disposition.
