LINGAYEN, Pangasinan: Some 500 policemen, enlisted personnel and officers, from Region 1 will be deployed in Manila to augment security during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
Chief Supt. Ericson Velasquez, regional director of Police Regional Office-1 (PRO-1) disclosed this during Monday’s awarding of medals and certificates of commendation to policemen and civilians who risked their lives and hailed as heroes when Typhoon “Lando” whipped Pangasinan from October 19 to 21 at the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office (PPP0) parade ground.
Of the said 500 augmentation team, 200 policemen will come from Pangasinan and others from the provinces of La Union and Ilocos Sur.
The 200 police personnel from Pangasinan, which included few women, are now being trained on crowd control and other peace-keeping efforts at the PPPO grounds.
Velasquez said the 500 policemen from Region 1 will provide augmentation support to the policemen from the PNP national headquarters to maintain peace and security during the APEC summit to be attended by leaders of Asia and the Pacific countries, including US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He said that while the PRO-1 police personnel will be initially deployed in the streets of Manila during the summit, another team of 500 cops are on standby for the same purpose.
Velasquez assured that the maintenance of peace and order in the region would not be affected as there is a support mechanism available from other government agencies such the Philippine Army. PNA
