Jennylyn Mercado’s most recent movies—Walang Forever and The Prenup in 2015, and Just the 3 of Us this month with John Lloyd Cruz—have all breached the P100-million mark in the box office. Also in the past two years, she has won back-to-back best actress awards at the 40th and 41st Metro Manila Film Festival for her movies English Only Please with leading man Derek Ramsay, and again, Walang Forever with on-screen partner Jericho Rosales.
With all these triumphs, everyone expected Mercado to throw a huge bash on her 29th birthday on May 15. But what did the “romantic-comedy queen”—a label given to her by veteran industry observers—do? Spend her special day in tranquility at home, and then out of the country.
“Kalahating taon nagta-trabaho ako so sabi ko, ito na yung chance kong makapag pahinga. So, isang linggo akong nasa bahay, sabi ko magpapahinga ako kasama ko yung anak ko,” the actress revealed during a press conference for an intimate wear brand she endorses.
She added that she culminated her rest week with a grand vacation in Maldives, which sparked gossips as it was reported that she spent it with rumored beau, Dennis Trillo.
When asked to comment, Mercado politely declined to give any details. But when it comes to upcoming projects, she revealed all the information she could share with much gusto.
Projects lined up
First up for Mercado, who has had her fair share of no. 1 hits under her belt, is a new album from Ivory Records set to be released in September. With eight tracks—six of which will be original and two, covers—the upcoming album will feature collaborations with artists in both songwriting and singing.
“Masasabi ko na ito yung isa sa mga albums na talagang hands-on ako kasi inaral namin yung mga songs, pinag-desisyunan namin ng mabuti yung covers,” Mercado further detailed.
A new teleserye in her home network GMA 7 is also in the works but since her latest movie was with Star Cinema—the movie arm of her home network’s biggest rival—the industry is in the buzz that she might just be the latest talent to switch to ABS-CBN.
“Hindi ko pa po alam. Siguro it’s between my manager and the network,” Mercado answered when asked, adding that her contract with GMA-7 has already expired.
Transferring networks or not, a new movie is already slated for the actress, which will be shown before the year ends. Who will she be partnering this time? Mercado refused to detail but said people will find out soon enough.
Still the ‘sexiest’
One thing is certain though, the sexy actress and proud mom is short-listed for this year’s FHM Philippines 100 Sexiest Woman list, a nationwide ranking that she topped last year. Her fans are campaigning for a back-to-back win to see her once more sashay in the runway.
Still the reigning “sexiest” Filipina, Mercado definitely feels flattered with the recognition. She expressed, “Masaya naman kasi kahit papaano napapansin pa rin nila na naaalagan ko yung sarili ko kahit na nanay na ako.”
The actress has been openly sharing that her body is a product of proper diet and her religious “pilates”—one of the most popular new exercise system that concentrates on core fitness—sessions.
To her possible, second FHM win, as well as others accolades, Mercado has this to say: “Sa kahit na anong bagay, kahit na anong competition o award giving body, never ako nag-expect kasi mahirap mag-expect. Kung ano man yung maging decision nila, I’d be happy.”
