BAGUIO CITY: City Prosecutor Elmer Sagsago has called for the establishment of a Department of Justice (DOJ) regional office in the City of Pines to facilitate and better address the needs of the region. “With the establishment of the DOJ Cordillera, we can pursue our aim of integrating the customary law of indigenous peoples into the legal system,” he said. At present, the DOJ regional assignment follows the old set up where Baguio, Benguet, Abra and Mountain Province are covered by the DOJ Region I office based in San Fernando City in La Union province, while Kalinga, Apayao and Ifugao are served by the DOJ Region 2 office. With the present set up, it is difficult to realize the said objective since the Cordillera provinces share the same set of beliefs and values but are served by two different offices mixed with other areas of varied cultures.
