TAICHUNG: Hundreds of angry protesters threw shoes at riot police on Sunday as Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang party held a congress to call for unity as public discontent grows with the government. The demonstrators—some of them jobless after factory shutdowns and others independence activists and supporters of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party—vented their anger at President Ma Ying-jeou, who is also the Kuomintang chairman.
