PSL 64th leg series Legazpi City fires off today


More than 300 swimmers will be gunning for World University Games slots when the Philippine Swimming League (PSL) stages its 64th Leg Series dubbed as Jaime C. Jimenez-El Presidente Swimming Championship today at the Mariners Polytechnic University Foundation Swimming Pool in Rawis, Legazpi City.

PSL President Susan Papa said they are looking for talented young swimmers who will represent the country in the World University Games scheduled next year in Gwangju, South Korea.

“I see crystal clear that swimming in the country is slowly being democratized now. The other association can’t do anything about it as it is the swimmers themselves want to compete for PSL even they are from the Philippine Swimming Incorporated (PSI),” said Papa.

Besides the World University Games, the event will also serve as tryout to pick swimmers for the Royal Bangkok Swimming Championships in November.

The age categories are six-under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17-over for boys and girls.

“We have a lot of talented swimmers right now in the PSL just like Paula Cayanan who is in Japan with a certain PSI swimmer. I thank God that swimming in the country is free fall all now. We educate parents, coaches and swimmers not to discriminate anyone,” stressed Papa who will be celebrating her 60th birthday on Sunday.

The top three finishers will be given medals while the Most Outstanding Swimmers get an individual trophy according to age band. Trophies will also be awarded to the Top 3 teams.

“We want to celebrate coach Susan’s birthday through staging a competition because we believe in her visions – to promote swimming, develop young talents and open the doors to everyone who wants to represent our country in international level,” added PSL Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa.

The PSL is accredited by the Federation of School Sports of the Philippines, an affiliate to International University Sports Federation.

“To see these young swimmers improve, win medals for our country and gradually achieve their goals of being the best in their age groups is already a birthday gift for me. That’s what I want to see from the very start and we won’t be getting tired in this journey as we believe that we have a bright future in swimming,” ended Papa.
