• PSL bets win gold in Day 1 of Phuket meet


    The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) started its campaign on a high note as Kyla Soguilon of Aklan ang Aubrey Tom of Marikina bagged gold medals in their respective age groups on Friday in the 2015 Phuket International Swimming Championship in Thanyapura, Thailand.

    Soguilon, the PSL Female Swimmer of the Year and Milo Junior Athlete of the Year awardee, dominated the girls’ 10 years open water 200-meter freestyle in two minutes and 57 seconds, beating her rivals from Thailand and China.

    “Kyla is a smart swimmer, she follows instructions step by step. She is a well disciplined swimmer. Despite of so many awards in and out of the PSL, she remains the same, humble young girl. She has been expose in all tri-media , and we remind her all the time not to put is winnings in her head. The Sogulon parents is also doing a good job in taking care of her in and out of the pool,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

    The eight-year-old Tom, on the other hand, submitted one minute and 25.85 seconds to reign supreme in the girls’ 8 years open water 100m freestyle category.

    “As for Aubrey who is joining her first international competition, she is small but terrible. She means business in going to Phuket, she’s determined to win,”

    Soguilon is looking to secure more medals for the Philippines when she competes in the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 200m Individual Medley while Tom takes part in the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.

    “Both were visited by Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) Secretary General Graham Lim and gave Kyla and Aubrey a token. Lim knows that they will be the cream of the crop for Universiade,” Papa said.

    The PSL is also scheduled to participate in the prestigious 2015 Indian Ocean All-Star Challenge in Perth Australia on April 1 to 8.

    Soguilon and Male Swimmer of the Year Sean Terence Zamora will be leading the squad along with Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh, Drew Benett Magbag, Martin Jacob Pupos, Stephen Guzman, Rio Lorenzo Malapitan, Julian Pupos, Aalia Jaire Espejo and Paul Christian Cusing.

    The PSL is the national sports swimming association for universities and colleges accredited by the FESSAP—an internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
