The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) resumes its grassroots development program as it goes to Bicol Region with the staging of the 100th PSL National Series dubbed as the 4th El Presidente – Commodore Jimenez Swim Cup on August 20 at the Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Swimming Pool in Legazpi City.
The tournament will be held in celebration of PSL President Susan Papa’s birthday as well as joining the festivities in the Ibalong Festival 2016.
“We are celebrating coach Susan’s birthday through staging a competition because we believe in her visions – to promote swimming, develop young talents and open the doors to everyone who wants to represent our country in international level,” said PSL Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa.
The one-day affair serves as tryout for international tournaments including the 2016 Tokyo Fall Swimming Championship in Japan, Royal Bangkok Swimming Championship in Thailand and the prestigious 2017 Summer World University Games in Taiwan.
“We’re inviting everyone to join us in this competition as we aim to identify more talents in this region. The swimming competition is open to everyone. It is very easy to join the competition, as you don’t need to pay for any membership. We are happy with the turnout of this edition in terms of number of participants who registered as early as last month,” said Papa.
More than 200 tankers have already confirmed attendance with the top three finishers in the 6-under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15-over will be given medals while trophies await the Most Outstanding Swimmers in each age band.
PSL is fresh from claiming its fourth-straight and fifth overall title in the Singapore Invitational Swimming Championship.
The young Filipino tankers bagged 79 gold medals, beating strong teams from China, Malaysia, Thailand and host Singapore.
“To see these young swimmers improve, win medals for our country and gradually achieve their goals of being the best in their age groups is already a birthday gift for me. That’s what I want to see from the very start and we won’t be getting tired in this journey as we believe that we have a bright future in swimming,” ended Papa.
PSL is a national sports swimming association for Universities and Colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (Fessap), internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
