A total of 1,200 medals are up for grabs in the 51st Philippine Swimming League (PSL) Series dubbed as Pamaskong Handog ng PSL that will unfold today at the Diliman Preparatory School swimming pool in Quezon City.
There are 13 age categories – 5-under, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17-over for girls and boys. The tournament is one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 international competitions the PSL will be joining in South Africa, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea and some European countries.
“We are inviting everyone to participate in this tournament since this will serve as a qualifying for next year’s international competitions. Everybody is welcome,” said PSL President Susan Papa.
The PSL is scheduled to participate in the Cape Town Swim Meet in Cape Town, South Africa in February. “This will be the final selection for the South Africa Swim Meet so be sure to join this leg for your chance of getting that very limited slot we have,” said Papa, a former Olympian.
“We would also like to thank Senator Nikki Coseteng for her support. She’s very supportive to our project promoting swimming in the country because our ultimate goal is to discover young potential talents for future international competitions.
“We don’t have to rely getting talents from abroad. We have to develop our own talents because we have enough talents. We have enough talents but the [problem is we lack comprehensive grassroots program and that’s what we are doing now,” added Papa.
The PSL swimmers are fresh from winning 28 gold medals in the 2013 Royal Bangkok Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
