    SINGAPORE: Philippine Swimming League (PSL) standouts Patrick Tierie, Christen Mercado and Sean Terence Zamora will jumpstart the country’s title-retention bid when the 2014 Singapore Invitational Swimming Championship unfolds today at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC).

    The 18-year-old Tierie competes in the boys’ 18-over 100m butterfly while Mercado hopes to deliver in the boys’ 18-over 200-meter Individual Medley, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.

    Zamora, a Grade 9 student at University of Santo Tomas Pay High School, plunges into action in the boys’ 13-14 200m IM, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.

    “This is a great and big accomplishment for PSL organization. I am happy the way our board let go of the approval of such big delegation. I thank God for making this possible, helping the PSL to successfully bring in swimmers to Singapore.”

    Also expected to shine are Michael Lozada, Marc Dula, Angelica Medrano, Kyla Soguilon, Emanuel Joshua Lorbes, Inaki Emil Lorbes, Martin Jacob Pupos, Andre Abacahin and Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh as well as the Cordero sisters Denjylie, Delia Angela and Dennice, who are all medallist in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

    “The PSL open the gates for other regions such as Iloilo, Aklan and Capiz. We let them realized there is more than going to Manila or Laguna. We told coaches and swimmers and parents to open their eyes that they don’t see for the longest time. We let them realize to thing big and start a bigger competition than local meet,” added Papa.

    Lozada participates in boys’7-8 50m backstroke, Dula in boys’7-8 100m butterfly, Medrano in girls’ 15-17 200m IM, Soguilon in girls’ 9-10 200m IM, Emanuel Joshua in boys’ 15-17 50m breaststroke, Inaki Emil in boys’ 13-14 100m butterfly, Pupos in boys’ 15-17 200m IM, Abacahin in boys’ 13-14 50m breaststroke, Mojdeh in girls’ 7-8 50m backstroke, Denjylie in girls’ 18-over 200m IM, Delia Angela in girls’ 18-over in 50m backstroke and Dennice in girls’ 18-over 100m butterfly.

    Also in the team are Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa, Secretariat Head Guia Llaguno, Technical Director Alfredo Mascardo Jr., coaches Alex Papa, Marlon Dula, Dennis Cordero, Joey Andaya, Ryan Robles, Ariel Compas, Virgilio de Luna and other mentors from different swimming clubs affiliated with the PSL.

    Last year, the PSL copped the overall title after winning 50 golds, 42 silvers and 30 bronzes.

    The SICC is the same venue where Olympic champion Michael Phelps and the US team acclimatized for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

    The PSL is accredited by the Federation of School Sports of the Philippines, an affiliate to International University Sports Federation.
