PSL tankers to be honored in PSA Annual Awards Night

Three young Philippine Swimming League (PSL) standouts will be recognized in the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards Night scheduled today at the One Esplanade in Pasay City.

Swimmer of the Year top candidates Sean Terence Zamora of University of Santo Tomas and Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh of Immaculate Heart of Mary College-Paranaque will be honored with the Tony Siddayao-Outstanding Young Athlete awards.

Zamora and Mojdeh made waves in international competitions last year by winning numerous gold medals in their respective events.

The then 14-year-old Zamora bagged 10 golds in the Indian Ocean All-Star Challenge in Perth, Australia; six golds with six new records in the Convoy Stingray Invitational Swimming Championship in Hong Kong; three golds and three silvers highlighted by three new records in the 11th SICC Invitational Swim Meet in Singapore; and two golds, one silver and one bronze in the ASIJ Orcas Fall Classic Invitational Swimming Meet in Tokyo, Japan.

For her part, Mojdeh delivered six golds and one silver in the Indian Ocean All-Star Challenge in Perth, Australia; four silvers and one bronze in the Convoy Stingray Invitational Swimming Championship in Hong Kong; five golds and one silver including two new records in the 11th SICC Invitational Swim Meet in Singapore; one gold and one silver in the 21st SSC Open Midget Meet in Singapore; and three golds and one silver in the ASIJ Orcas Fall Classic Invitational Swimming Meet in Tokyo, Japan.

Sharing the spotlight is reigning PSL Female Swimmer of the Year Kyla Soguilon of Aklan who will be receiving her second Milo Junior Athlete of the Year award.

Soguilon won seven golds in Thanyapura Invitational Swimming Meet in Phuket, Thailand; seven golds and three silvers in the Indian Ocean All-Star Challenge in Perth, Australia; five golds, one silver and one bronze in the 11th SICC Invitational Swim Meet in Singapore; and four golds in the ASIJ Orcas Fall Classic Invitational Swimming Meet in Tokyo, Japan.

“PSL indeed is very happy that we have three PSA outstanding swimmers for the year for 2015. What a blessing. In just five years of existence, we were able to develop young athletes from grassroots level,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

“Their hard work plus good in character bring them to be outstanding athletes both in local and international competition. It’s truly a blessing and we’re hoping to develop more young swimmers like them,” added Papa.

PSL Honorary Chairman and former Senator Nikki Coseteng added “We want to thank the Philippine Sportswriters Association for honoring our young swimmers in this prestigious Awards Night. We hope that these kids will serve as inspiration to young other swimmers.”

Joining Zamora, Mojdeh and Soguilon in the limelight are boxers Nonito Donaire Jr. and Donnie Nietes, and golfer Miguel Tabuena, who will be receiving their respective Athlete of the Year awards.
