PSL’s 100th National Series fires off today

MORE than 300 swimmers will be vying for World Summer University Games berths when the Philippine Swimming League (PSL) stages its 100th National Series dubbed the 4th El Presidente – Commodore Jimenez Swim Cup today at the Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Swimming Pool in Legazpi City.

Trophies and medals will be awarded to the Most Outstanding Swimmers in each age group (6-under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15-over) for boys and girls but more importantly, the PSLw ill select talented swimmers for the World Summer University Games scheduled next year in New Taipei City in Taiwan.

“This competition is open to all. We are not requiring a membership just to be part of the Philippine Team going to the World University Games. As long as you meet the standards and you are willing to represent our country, you are in,” stressed PSL President Susan Papa.

“We want to democratize swimming in the Philippines. We want to give everyone a chance to experience world-class competitions like the Universiade. It’s a once in a lifetime experience as you’ll be competing against the world’s best student-athletes,” added Papa.

It will also serve as tryout for international tournaments including the 2016 Tokyo Fall Swimming Championship in Japan and Royal Bangkok Swimming Championship in Thailand.

“It’s going to be an exciting competition as these kids gun for slots in the World University Games. We are hoping to discover fresh talents here for future international competitions,” said Papa.

The tournament will be held in celebration of PSL President Susan Papa’s birthday as well as joining the festivities in the Ibalong Festival 2016.

“Coash Susan Papa chose Legazpi to celebrate her birthday as it was the first swimming team that made realization that swimming must be open for all. She worked so hard to democratize it. We’re happy that we are now slowly achieving our goal -to open the doors to these young potential swimmers,” added PSL Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa.

Trophies will also be awarded to the Top 3 teams.

“We are very glad that Susan Papa celebrates her birthday competition in Bicol. The Mariners Polytechnic University Foundation is happy to host the competition and welcome all participants from different parts of the region,” said Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation President Dante Jimenez, who is also the founder of Violence Against Crime and Corruption.

PSL is a national sports swimming association for Universities and Colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (Fessap), internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
