The Department of Agriculture (DA) is implementing strict measures to prevent the entry of apples from the United States that were reportedly contaminated with Listerosis bacteria.
In a statement, the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry said that it has alerted all ports of entry to closely monitor all apple shipments from the US.
The US Food and Drugs Administration recently alerted the Philippine government after tests in the apple packing facility of Bidart Bros tested positive with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Exposure to the bacteria causes Listeriosis, a rare but serious illness that may cause death. It can cause flu-like symptoms, diarrhea and meningitis, among others.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala advised consumers not to be complacent even with the government’s strict monitoring as there is a possibility that the contaminated apples would find their way to markets and sold at much lower prices.
