The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Thursday provisionally approved a 50-centavo fare reduction for public utility jeepney (PUJ), bringing the minimum fare from P8.50 to only P8 in Region 4. The LTFRB also ordered a fare rate increase of 10 centavos for every succeeding kilometer. Persons with disability (PWDs), senior citizens and student in the region will continue to receive a 20-percent discounted fare rate. Representatives from various transportation groups in Batangas and other areas attended the public hearings called by the LTFRB to determine the fare-reduction value in the light of the continuing decline in diesel and gasoline prices. The transport group cautioned the Board to also consider the cost of maintenance, parts and other operational expense in considering a fare reduction.
