The national weightlifting team won one gold and one bronze medal in the 1st Southeast Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Ayutthaya, Thailand.
Olympian Hidilyn Diaz delivered the only gold medal of the team in the three-day meet participated by host Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Laos and Myanmar.
Diaz cleared the 98-kilogram in snatch and lifted 115 kilograms in clean and jerk for a total of 213 kilograms, good enough to top the women’s 53-kg. division. She defeated Nguyen Thi Thuy of Vietnam and Kittima Sutanan of Thailand, who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
According to Philippine Weightlifting Association Vice President Elbert Atilano, it was the country’s first gold medal in Southeast Asian level in 20 years.
The last time the Philippines won a gold medal was in the 18th Southeast Asian Games held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1995 courtesy of Alvin Delos Santos.
Incheon Asian Games veteran Nestor Colonia chipped in one bronze in the men’s 56-kg. category dominated by Vietnamese world champions Tran Le Quoc Toan and Thach Quoc Tuan.
