THE Philippines’ palay (unhusked rice) production in the second quarter of 2018 may be slightly higher than expected because of better irrigation and increased government subsidies, the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

In its April-June 2018 Palay and Corn Forecast, the state-run statistics agency said output in the quarter, based on the standing crop, could hit 4.08 million metric tons (MMT), a 0.74-percent increase from the 4.05 MMT projected in April, but a 1.8-percent decrease from last year’s 4.15 MMT.
