THE quick response by volunteer firefighters prevented the fire that struck a five-story building at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila from spreading and causing more damage. The Raha Volunteers Fire Department responded two minutes after receiving a call from a security guard. Superintendent Jaime Ramirez, Manila Fire Department chief, said the fire at St. Raymund de Peñafort building, which houses both the Faculty of Arts and Letters and the College of Commerce and Business Administration, began at the multi-media office at 8:40 pm on Sunday. Officials said investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. UST officials announced through social media accounts that classes in the building are suspended on Monday.
