MADDELA, Quirino: The Sangguniang Bayan here has enacted a measure to stop the use of plastic bags and to regulate its utilization on wet goods. The new measure was sponsored by Councilor Mariano Gadingan Jr. If approved, the measure will also prohibit the use of styrofoam within the municipality of Maddela, now on its second reading. The ordinance will also prohibit all business establishments and individuals from selling and providing plastic bags to customers for packaging goods. Violators will be fined P500 for first offense, P1,500 for second and P2,500 for third. “There is now a need to regulate the use of plastic bags to prevent potential serious ecological imbalance particularly in creeks, rivers and other waterways due to the rampant use of plastics in the municipality,” Gadingan said.
