Rain or Shine accomplished a clean 3-0 sweep of the best-of-five semifinals of the Philippine Basketball Association Season 40 Commissioners Cup by beating Meralco 107-98 on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Raymund Almazan, who posted 14 points and six rebounds, led Rain or Shine’s third quarter assault resulting in a 35-22 lead. Paul Lee who finished with 23 points was instrumental in achieving the Elasto Paintmasters’ 84-74 lead by the end of third period.
“We got a really big break without their import. I’m really happy that players like Paul Lee remain consistent in the series,” said Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao. “We are just going to wait for the result of the other semifinals between Talk ‘N Text and Purefoods.”
Import Wayne Chism scattered 16 points plus 11 rebounds and seven assists while Ryan Arana and Gabe Norwood finished with 12 points and 10 points respectively for the Elasto Paintmasters who marked their fifth finals appearance.
Rain or Shine won only one championship in those four finals appearances.
Cliff Hodge and Mark Macapagal led Meralco finishing with 20 points apiece.
