Jeff Chan’s shooting prowess helped Rain or Shine oust Blackwater 95-90 on Saturday and enter the knockout phase of the quarterfinals of the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The left-handed Chan, a former Far Eastern University standout, shot 6-of-10 in the field to finish with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.
“I really need to step up in this game, and happily I did,” Chan told The Manila Times during a post-game interview. “I’m hoping everybody will step up in the next game because it’s a knockout game. We’re expecting that game to be difficult.”
“Even though we were beaten by both teams [Northern Luzon Expressway and Talk ‘N Text], we are not thinking of revenge. All we really wanted is to win and move on to the semifinals,” he added.
Rain or Shine lost to Talk ‘N Text 95-85, and to NLEX 106-111, during the elimination round.
Freshman Maverick Ahanmisi posted 11 points while Raymond Almazan also had 11 points plus nine rebounds for the Elasto Painters. Guard Jericho Cruz and Gilas Pilipinas player Gabe Norwood contributed nine and eight points, respectively.
Rain or Shine ended the first period leading 17-14 before Chan took charge in the second canto scoring 10 points to bring the score to 44-34 in their favor at the half¬time break.
The Elasto Painters were outscored in the third period 25-26 but managed to grab the lead 69-60 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The game turned into a close fight in the second half as Elite guard Carlo tie the game at 75-all in the last period.
But coach Yeng Guiao’s Elasto Painters was too much to overcome, denying Blackwater of victory.
“One game down, one to go. If we want to make the semifinals, we have to play better than what we did today,” said Guiao during the post-game interview. “A struggle shaking off Blackwater. I guess the effort of one guy, [Lastimosa], we’re lucky he didn’t get enough support from his teammates.”
“We couldn’t stop him, but we were able to make good shots in the endgame. We prepared really hard for this game but I didn’t see the defensive effort. We’re hoping we can prepare a little harder maybe for the next game and have some serious talk with the guys,” he added.
Lastimosa scored a game-high 35 points via 13-of-24 shooting in the field plus five rebounds and five assists to lead Blackwater. The Elite finished 10 in the playoff round after eliminating Mahin¬dra in the elimination round.
Rain or Shine registered more rebounds (51-43), assists (20-16), three-point shots (4-2) and second chance points (22-10) than Blackwater.
In the second game, Talk ‘N Text beat NLEX 90-88.
