Rain or Shine to play without Lee

Rain or Shine will take on Star in the season opener of the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City at 7 p.m. today.

Coach Yeng Guiao of Rain or Shine revealed that his go-to-guy Paul Lee would miss several games because of an injured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

“We are going to play without Paul Lee for at least five weeks because he is scheduled to undergo therapy for his left knee,” Guiao told The Manila Times in a phone interview on Tuesday.

“His absence will give rookie third overall pick Maverick Ahanmisi the opportunity to excel as well as the other rookie Don Trollano. Actually, we were all excited to play last Sunday but the game was postponed due to typhoon.”

Besides Ahanmisi and Trollano, the Elasto Paintmasters will also rely on Gilas Pilipinas player Gabe Norwood, Chris Tiu, big man Beau Belga, the 6’7 Raymund Almazan, Jay-R Quinahan and Jeff Chan, among others.

“We’re not going to relax against Star because they have a new system. They are no longer using the triangle,” he added. “Tim Cone is no longer their coach. We just finished practicing earlier and yesterday.”

Star, on the other hand, will be led by its new head coach Jason Webb.

Veteran James Yap, Jean Marc Pingris and Peter June Simon will lead the Hotshots.
