ACQUIRED Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS, a chronic sexually transmitted disease, is caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV, which weakens the immune system of the body, disabling it to fight diseases.
No effective cure for HIV currently exists, but with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. The medicine used to control the spread of HIV is called antiretroviral therapy or ART. With continuous medication and proper medical supervision, antiretroviral therapy can keep HIV patients healthy, and greatly lower their chance of transmitting the virus to others.
Early diagnosis and management are crucial, which is why the Department of Health has made HIV testing and counseling more accessible to the public. This move was prompted by the rise of HIV cases in the country. Healthway Medical aims to impart knowledge and increase HIV/AIDS awareness among Filipinos. The first step in raising HIV/AIDS awareness is through educating oneself.
The Philippines recorded the highest number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases — over 800 in just 30 days. The Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 841 new cases of the potentially deadly infection in June 2016, based on data from the HIV/AIDS Registry of the Philippines (HARP). Of these newly-reported HIV cases, 104 have already developed into full-blown AIDS. Most of the cases were contracted through sexual contact, while 60 cases came from injected drug use and four came from mother-to-child transmission.
HIV prevention tips from the Department of Health are in the form of ABCDE- Abstinence, Being faithful to your partner, Condom use, saying no to illegal Drugs, and Educating yourself.
The Department of Health has also recently partnered with the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), World Health Organization (WHO), and advocacy group Love Yourself(TLY) to launch the PrEP program, which introduced Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP), a daily oral medication for people at very high risk for HIV. For more information about HIV/AIDS, it’s best to consult a physician.
This information campaign on HIV and AIDS awareness is part of Healthway Medical’s advocacy of instilling a healthy mindset among Filipinos. Consultations with a doctor and HIV screening are advised.
