‘Rak of Aegis’ sweeps awards at 7th Gawad Buhay

When it rains, it pours—but this time in a good way.Awards rained on the critically-acclaimed original rock musical Rak of Aegis—whose story spotlights the indomitable Filipino spirit amid poverty and calamity in the flood-submerged fictional town of Villa Venizia—at the Philstage Gawad Buhay 2014 recognition night at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) musical inspired by Typhoon Ondoy proved just how effective it is to combine advocacy and art as its cast and crew took home a total of 12 awards.

These include Outstanding Original Musical; Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical; Female Lead Performance in a Musical (Kim Molina); Male Featured Performance in a Musical (Pepe Herrera); Outstanding Original Libretto (Liza Magtoto); Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical (Maribel Legarda); Outstanding Musical Direction (Myke Salomon); Outstanding Choreography for a Play or Musical (Gio Gahol); Outstanding Costume Design (Carlo Pagunaling); Outstanding Sound Design (Myke Salomon and Happy Constantino); and Outstanding Set Design (Mio Infante).

The Natatanging Gawad Buhay, or the lifetime achievement award, was given to two theater visionaries, Onofre Pagsanghan of Dulaang Sibol and Amelia Lapena Bonifacio of Teatrong Mulat for their distinctive efforts of bringing theater to children.
