Rampant car theft in Legazpi city noted

LEGAZPI CITY: This city now has the dubious distinction of being the carnapping capital of the region following unsuccessful efforts by lawmen to stop the rampant theft of motorcycles here.

In the latest incident, three motorcycles were stolen late last week in less than 24 hours, according to Romeo Esplana of the Citizens Crime Watch Bicol Chapter.

Mayor Noel Rosal said 30 percent of the incidents took place at the Gaisano Pacific Mall, the biggest mall in the city that ironically is short on security. Rosal said he has already called the attention of Gaisano management regarding this matter but nothing has been done about the problem to this day.

He warned the Philippine National Police (PNP) to curb the rising tide of carnapping and criminality in the area. A PNP report showed 251 motorcycles have been stolen in Bicol in 2013 with Legazpi topping the list.

The same report said that 19 carnapping incidents happened in Legazpi in March alone and the last three incidents took place this month.
