Sunshine Dizon plays a wife betrayed in ‘Ika-6 Na Utos’
“Her most personal role” is how GMA Network describes the latest character dramatic actress Sunshine Dizon tackles in the afternoon soap, Ika-6 Na Utos, which premieres on Monday.
Dizon breathes life to Emma, a timid but sweet and cheerful souvenir merchant who falls deeply in love with Rome (Gabby Concepcion), a refined pilot. The two eventually marry, and for a time live a happy life together.
Unfortunately for Emma, their promise of forever vanishes when her husband is seduced by the sexy and ambitious Georgia (Ryza Cenon).
While she acknowledges the fact that Emma’s story hits close to home, Dizon clarified she did not take on the role because of hers.
“To be honest, GMA has known ever since that I’ve always been interested in doing out-of-the-box characters. It just so happens that something unfortunate happened in my life. I won’t deny the fact that it’s quite similar to our story but the story and characters [of Ika-6 Na Utos]are very beautiful so the role wasn’t one for me to turn down,” Dizon said at an interview on Tuesday night.
It will be remembered that the 32-year-old actress filed a violation of the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004 and concubinage in August against her husband Timothy Tan of six years and his alleged mistress.
“Just like what I said to the creative team, I don’t think I’m the only artist in the world to have portrayed a character undergoing circumstances similar to real life,” Dizon added.
When asked how she prepared to tackle the character of Emma, Dizon, who arrived at the press conference dressed in fiery red, boldly answered, “I just treat it as it is. It’s work, it’s a character. I try to separate my personal life from my work.”
The show’s creative team further denied that the story and Emma’s character was tailor-made for Dizon. According to RJ Nuevas and Dode Cruz, they have had Ika-6 Na Utos—hinged on the sixth commandment, “Thou shall not commit adultery”—since 2015.
Like Dizon, Emma takes revenge on her husband and her mistress when she transforms from a timid housewife to a more sophisticated and successful businesswoman. The scenario is parallel to the actress’ decision to undergo cosmetic surgery a few months after her marital woes became a media staple. She whittled down her heavier frame to a more svelte body with billboards along EDSA to prove it, but denied she went on an overhaul to get even with her husband.
“There was a time that I was quite big after having two kids, and I got so busy taking care of the family. So when my ad came out, everybody thought the reason for my weight loss was because of what happened to me and my husband—but that’s not actually true,” Dizon noted.
On the contrary, the actress disclosed that the deal for her Belo Clinic endorsement was done while she was still with her husband. She said she owed her career and her audience to look good again.
Asked how she thinks her ex-husband and his alleged mistress will react if they see her new soap, Dizon boldly replied anew, “Kung tamaan sila, tamaan sila. This for me is pure work and it’s outside my personal life. It’s not like my world only revolves around them.”
Directed by Laurice Guillen, Ika-6 Na Utos will air daily beginning December 5 on GMA Afternoon Prime, right after Eat Bulaga.
