A SUSPECTED Communist rebel was killed and a militiaman was wounded after fighting broke-out between government troops and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels early Saturday morning in a remote village in Laak town in Composela Valley.
Major Michael Angelo Candole, executive officer of the Philippine Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion (IB), said in a report sent to Camp Aguinaldo in Manila that the encounter took place at about 7 a.m. in Barangay Datu Ampatuan in Laak town.
Candole said that the encounter started as a group of militiamen, led by one Cpl. Agay, was conducting pursuit operation against a band of rebels believed to be behind the killing of an off–duty soldier in Asuncion town in Davao del Norte last February 22.
He said the militiamen ran into another group of leftist insurgents in the vicinity of Sitio Agsam triggering a firefight that lasted for about 30 minutes.
Candole said the group recovered an M-14 rifle along with the body of the slain rebel, while the wounded militiaman was airlifted to a local hospital.
The body of the unidentified slain insurgent was turned over to Laak officials.
