A soldier and a communist rebel were killed in an encounter between government troops and rebels late Friday morning in a remote village in Bais City, Negros Oriental, the military reported over the weekend. The identities of the slain soldier and rebel were withheld prior to notification of next of kin. The encounter between troops of the army’s 79th infantry Battalion and rebels took place at about 10:15 a.m. in Sitio Sandana, Brgy. Mansaghan in Bais City, Negros Oriental. The soldiers were conducting security operations at the village when they were fired at by 15 New People’s Army rebels, trigerring a fierce firefight. The rebels belonged to the Southeast Front, Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros.
