Suspected rebels blasted a steel pylon in the southern Philippines and resulting to a power failure in several areas in the restive region where security forces are fighting terrorism and rebellion.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the weekend attack, but the military suspect rebels were behind the blast in Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao province.

There was no report of casualties from the bombing and efforts are being undertaken by authorities to restore electricity in the area. The pylon is being maintained by the private transmission firm National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.

Security forces are battling members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement, who are pursuing an independent state in the region, which is also home to the larger Moro Islamic Liberation Front now negotiating peace with Manila. Al Jacinto
