San Beda College and Arellano University will try to further solidify their grip of the lead as the they clash with Lyceum of the Philippines University and Jose Rizal University, respectively, today in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Cubs, eyeing an unprecedented eight straight titles, routed the Light Bombers, 86-63, while the Braves downed the San Sebastian Staglets, 78-65, on Thursday to continue to hold on the lead with identical 10-1 (win-loss) records.
Sam Abu Hijle and Joshua Tagala are expected to carry the scoring load anew for San Beda after the two averaged 13.6 and 12 points while Arellano has been relying on prolific Guillmer dela Torre, who normed 19.5 points, second only to 21.8 points by leader Troy Mallinllin of La Salle-Greenhills.
The Cubs face the Junior Pirates, who are currently at No. 5 with a 6-4 mark, at 9 a.m. while the Braves face off the Light Bombers (2-9) at 10:45 a.m.
San Beda coach JB Sison said their goal right now is to stay at least in the top two for the important twice-to-beat edge in the Final Four.
“We hope to wins as many games as we can and try to get that twice-to-beat advantage,” said Sison.
The other matches pit Mapua Institute of technology against San Sebastian (1-10) at 12:30 p.m., Perpetual Help (4-6) with Letran (4-6) at 2:15 p.m. and Emilio Aguinaldo College (0-10) against College of St. Benilde (7-3) at 4 p.m.
