THE San Beda College Red Cubs needed a five-minute extension before pulling off a 78-65 win over Mapua Red Robins on Saturday to capture their sixth straight juniors basketball crown in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) juniors basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jushua Andrei Caracut, Marc Joper Diputado, Kenneth Loiue Alas and
Niko Abatayo kept their composure in the overtime period to outscore
the Red Robins, 19-6, to claim their 21st overall juniors title and became the most winningest in the history of the league.
“Thank God! Actually naubos kami down-the-stretch. Buti na lang naka-recover kami sa overtime period,” said Red Cubs coach JV Sison, whose sixth straight title is the longest in the league.
Caracut finished with 30 points, including five in the extension that saw them led by 10 points, 71-61, still less thean two minutes remaining.
“Iyong doubters nandyan naman talaga iyan. Kaya sabi ko sa mga players ko maglaro na lang ng husto. Ipakita ‘yung best nila sa larong ito,” added Sison referring to critics, who doubted their capabality to win the crown after losing Game One, 84-75, on Monday. They bounced back to win Game Two 78-68 on Wednesday.
The win was a double celebration for San Beda following an 89-70 win by the Red Lions over the Arellano Chiefs to win the seniors title, their fifth straight and thier 19th overall collegiate crown.
