• Red Cubs start seven-peat bid

IT WILL be six-peat champion San Beda Red Cubs’ turn to test last year’s runner-up Mapua Red Robins today in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Red Cubs face the Red Robins in a rematch of last year’s finals at 12 noon to be followed by the game between Jose Rizal Light Bombers and the Arellano Braves at 2 p.m.

Coach JV Sison’s Red Cubs, the most winningest in the high school division with already 21 titles including a rare six straight championship last year, remain as the favorites in the season despite losing several key players.

“We have a different team this year because most of our seniors have already graduated so we expect a really tough season,” said Sison.

Mapua coach Randy Alcantara, however, acknowleged San Beda’sbasketball program, which is the key to their success.

“We know that San Beda is being sustained by its basketball system and program and they always remain hard to beat regardless of the players who are available,” said Alcantara.
