Red Lions, Chiefs aim to remain on top of standings

The San Beda College Red Lions and Arellano University Chiefs aim to keep their hold of the top spot when they face separate foes today in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
The Red Lions, seeking for a rare five-straight championship crown, will battle the San Sebastian College Stags at 2 p.m. while the Arellano Chiefs face host Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers at 4 p.m. In the juniors division, defending champions San Beda Red Cubs take on the San Sebastian Staglets at 12 p.m. while the Jose Rizal Light Bombers collide with the Arellano Braves at 6 p.m.
Coach Boyet Fernandez of the Red Lions is confident that his wards would bounce back after tasting their first defeat, 76-83, in six outings at the hands of College of Saint Benilde Blazers on Monday.
“After the loss, I keep telling the players to be more aggressive especially in defense in our next game,” said Fernandez.
Meanwhile, the Stags of coach Topex Robinson are eager to recover from their 89-81 loss to Mapua Institute of Technology also on Monday. The Stags are now sharing the fourth to sixth spots with the Heavy Bombers and the Blazers, all three bearing similar 3-3 records.
A win by both the Stags and Chiefs will send them back to the Top Four. That might be a tough task for Arellano under Coach Jerry Codinera because they will be facing an upbeat Heavy Bombers who are coming off from a 63-62 victory over University of Perpetual Help Altas on July 23.
“We know Jose Rizal plays tough defense and we hope to be ready against them,” said Codinera.
