Red Lions eye share of top pot

FIVE-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions will attempt to grab a share of the top spot when they battle the San Sebastian Stags while the Lyceum Pirates will face Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals today in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

A win by the Red Lions would improve their record to 7-1 and give them a share of the no.1 spot occupied by the Letran Knights. They will collide with the Stags at 4 p.m. while the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals, the only team to beat the Knights so far, will take on the Lyceum Pirates at 2 p.m.

In the high school division, the EAC Brigadiers will battle the Lyceum Junior Pirates at 10 a.m. while six-peat titlist San Beda Red Cubs fight the San Sebastian Staglets at 12 noon.

Rookie coach Jamike Jarin cautioned his wards not to be complacent and not to take the Stags lightly. San Beda’s lone defeat was to Letran, 80-93, on July 16. The Red Lions bounced back from that loss by winning all four matches; the most recent was over the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 88-69, on August 6.

He will again lean on Nigerians Ola Adeogun, Pierre Tankou, Arthur de la Cruz, Ronbill Tongco, Ryusei Koga, Micole Solera, Roldan Sara and Javee Mocon.

The Stags, who are aiming for their third win against six losses, will bank on the prowess of Michael Calisaan, Ryan Costelo, Bradwyn Guinto, Genmar Bragais and Alvin John Capobres.
