• Red Lions stake solo leadership in NCAA


    FOUR-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions stake their hold of solo top spot when they tangle with last year’s runner-up Letran Knights today in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.

    The Red Lions bearing a 7-1 win-loss slate face the Knights at 4 p.m. while University of Perpetual Help Altas seek to regain their share of the third spot as they battle equally tough College of St. Benilde Blazers at 2 p.m.

    Reigning Juniors titlist San Beda Red Cubs and Letran Squires, both bearing similar 7-1 slate, dispute the top spot when they face each other at 6 p.m. The other secondary match pits St. Benilde Greenies against Perpetual Help Altalettes at 12 noon.

    Coach Boyet Fernandez’ Red Lions, fresh from their 77-75 conquest off Perpetual Help Altas last Aug. 6, are favored over Letran, which is toting a 2-6 win-loss card for solo 9th just a win ahead over cellar dweller Mapua Cardinals’ 1-8 record.

    The Knights twin win were over Mapua (79-67) on July 9 and Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals (63-61) last July 30 while the Red Lions lone setback was at the hands of CSB Blazers, 76-83, on July 28.
