• Red Lions take on Generals, seek solo top spot

DEFENDING champion San Beda College Red Lions aim for the solo top spot when they face Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals while San Sebastian College Stags try to strengthen their hold of solo fourth when they battle Mapua today in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The four-peat seeking Red Lions are currently locked with the Letran Knights at the top of the standings both bearing identical 9-2 win-loss slates.

Coach Boyet Fernandez’s team, whose twin setbacks were at the hands of the Lyceum Pirates, 70-66 last June 24, and Letran (67-74) on August 24, are highly favored over the Generals because of their 80-65 rout of coach Gerry Esplana’s team in the first round of the elimination on July 8.

San Beda, the winningest team in the oldest collegiate league in the country with 18 titles, will be facing the Generals at 6 p.m. following the San Sebastian Stags and Mapua Cardinals encounter at 4 p.m.
