The Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) Red Robins survived the Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws, 71-68, in the quarterfinals of the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) MEC Networks Cup at the SGS Stadium in Quezon City on Thursday.
The Baby Tamaraws initiated a 10-2 run behind the efforts of Cyrus Torres, Louell Gonzales, Royce Alforque, and Eric Jabel to snatch the lead with 3:55 minutes left in the third quarter, 44-50.
Bryan Samudio broke the dry spell for the Red Robins after scoring inside the paint in the 2:21 minute mark, 46-52. Jack Gloria drove to the basket, stretching FEU’s lead to 10 with 24.5 seconds left in the quarter, 46-56.
Red Robin Will Gozum sank a floater midway through the final quarter, 56-59. Brian Lacap drained three consecutive treys for MHSS to regain the lead with 3:21 minutes left in the match, 65-59.
FEU unleashed a 7-0 run with Jabel completing his three-point play and drive toward the basket. Daniel Celzo hit a mid-range jumper to keep MHSS at bay with 1:03 minutes left, 70-68.
Samudio split his free throws as Gonzales drew the foul in the 14.2 second mark, 71-68.
“We started slow in the second half so they (FEU) got the momentum. We snatched the advantage but they managed to cut our lead. I told my players that they can really play and they should not back down. So what’s good is that they returned and Lacap made his three-pointers and regain our lead,” said MHSS head coach Randy Alcantara.
Lacap top scored for the Red Robins with 21 points, followed by Romuel Junsay with 16 markers. Samudio and Gozum combined for 23 points and 24 rebounds.
Gonzales and Jabel led the Baby Tamaraws with 15 and 14 markers, respectively. Alforque added 12 more points also for FEU.
Meanwhile, the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) Greenies beat the National University (NU) Bullpups, 83-79, while Adamson University (AdU) Baby Falcons annihilated the San Beda College (SBC) Red Cubs, 83-54.
Defending champions Chiang Kai Shek College (CKSC) Blue Dragons trounced the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs, 76-61.
The LSGH Greenies will battle the Adamson Baby Falcons at 1:30 p.m., while the CKSC Blue Dragons will face the MHSS Red Robins in the semifinals at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday at the same venue.
