• Red tide alert up in Davao Oriental, Masbate


    THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Thursday warned the public from catching and consuming shellfish from shellfish and other fish species from the coastal waters of Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental and Mandaon in Masbate is now positive for the red tide toxin. “All types of shellfish and acetes or ‘alamang’ gathered and collected from the areas are not safe for human consumption,” the agency said. BFAR, however, said that several species – including fish, shrimps and crabs – are safe to eat provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
