TWO policemen were killed when suspected communist rebels shot at their prowl car in an attack that also injured two other officers and a civilian in Negros Occidental on Thursday night.
The fatalities were identified as Police Officer 3 Joe Harry Peralta and PO1 Henry Pacheco, who were also shot in the head at close range.
The duo along with the wounded officers – PO2 Jay Arroyo and PO1 Modesto Viña – had been responding to a report of a bolo attack in Barangay Caningay around 10:20 p.m.
The unit from Candoni Municipal Police Station were ambushed by suspected New People’s Army rebels near Panaculan Creek bridge, about 2 kilometers away from the municipal hall.
Also injured in the attack was civilian Rey Duales.
The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division condemned what it described as a treacherous act.
In a statement, the Army decried the attack as “a blatant violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), which the CPP-NPA-NDF is a signatory.”
Citing witness accounts, local Army spokesman Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson said Peralta and Pacheco were shot point blank in the head as the duo were sprawled on the ground.
