CHICAGO: William “Refrigerator” Perry, a former Chicago Bears defender who was among the NFL’s most popular players of the 1980s, says he is well after being hospitalized for a leg infection.

Perry, 53, was hospitalized at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital after being diagnosed while trying to obtain medication refills for diabetes and other ailments.

Famous in his playing days for his massive frame, Perry now uses a walker for mobility after ending his career, following a failed comeback attempt in 1996 with the London Monarchs of the NFL-backed World League of American Football.

“The Fridge” played nine NFL seasons as a defensive tackle but was given a chance at running back and scored a touchdown for the Bears in a 46-10 Super Bowl victory over New England in 1986.

Perry used his fame after his football career to pursue singing and acting opportunities, en-dorsements and even had a turn at compe-titive eating.
