For moviegoers who look forward to Regal Entertainment’s iconic horror franchise Shake, Rattle & Roll at the annual Metro Manila Film Festival, it may come as a disappointment that a 16th edition will not be part of the nine entries chosen this year.
Producer Roselle Monteverde, who has been co-managing the 53-year old movie-making company with her mom—Philippine showbiz’ beloved Mother Lily—for a good number of years now, told The Manila Times, however, that loyal fans of Shake should not be led to believe that Regal is no longer pursuing long running the film series.
“The very reason Shake is taking a break this year is because we want to make sure we give its fans another good installment,” she clarified. “We’ve been working hard at several scripts [Shake, Rattle & Roll always comes in a trilogy], but we didn’t meet the deadline [for this year’s festival]. We don’t want to rush the process that’s why we’ve decided to offer another horror film instead in Haunted Mansion.”
Originally titled Retreat House, one can almost figure out the storyline of good-looking teenagers on retreat in a creepy old mansion, where the supernatural takes over. But before anyone judges it for a typical teenage horror flick, it will be good to know that internationally award-winning director and screenwriter Jun Lana is at the helm of this project.
“It’s all really very exciting, because it’s like Shake, Rattle & Roll on a bigger scale, since it will just be one story from beginning to end,” enthused Roselle. “What’s more, we’ve chosen this to be Janella’s [Salvador] launching movie, because we really believe talented yung bata.”
The second-generation producer first saw Janella in her small role for ABS-CBN’s long-running daytime series Be Careful With My Heart. Taken by the young girls good looks and gift for acting and singing, Roselle followed her career and was not surprised when the teenager landed her own TV series, Oh My G, this year.
“I didn’t even know she’s the daughter of [actress-singer] Jenine Desiderio and [singer-songwriter] Juan Miguel Salvador, but I always knew she had potential,” Roselle added.
With filming for Haunted Mansion almost done, she and Mother Lily are happy they chose Janella to headline Regal’s MMFF entry.
“She’s certainly delivered, and we’re happy to have her as a Regal Baby,” Roselle ended.
Haunted Mansion also stars Mario Mortel and Jerome Ponce. The movie opens on Christmas Day.
