If she can help it, Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid will shy away from kissing scenes in her acting projects. She fears her four-year-old son Nate might get confused if he sees her on TV, locked-lips with her on-screen partner.
According to Velasquez, while she realizes such takes are part of an actor’s job, she needs to be sensitive and draw the line at work as a mother of a pre-schooler.
“Kissing scenes were no big deal for me before, but it’s not the same now with an inquisitive kid. I might find it difficult to answer his questions,” the devoted mom laughed aloud.
Velasquez realized how she could easily find herself in a sticky situation with her beloved Nate, after he saw the pilot episode of Poor Señorita on GMA Network—a light drama, which serves as her comeback vehicle on prime time TV.
“He told me everything he saw. Thank goodness I didn’t have to kiss Mikael [Daez] in the pilot,” the singer-actress laughed again, referring to her leading man in the program.
The new series keeps Ogie Alcasid’s better half out of the house four times a week for taping. But before she started this more demanding work schedule, she made sure to carefully explain to her son why she has to be away, and assure him that in her place, his dad and grandmother will take care of him.
“Our talks went on for about two weeks until he understood what was going to happen from day to day,” Velasquez shared.
Much as she would like to, the 45-year-old celebrity cannot take her son on location, which are generally “not child-friendly.” Apparently, young Nate is slightly asthmatic, and mom would rather not risk an attack if she brings him for taping.
Velasquez is, however, very proud of how Nate quickly coped with her return to work, and how he understood the situation.
“I can already talk to him in a way that he can understand since he’s already four,” she explained. “Of course, it takes time for him to understand new situations, kasi iba pa rin if Mommy is around.”
Besides her prime time show, Velasquez is busy with her continuing Regine Series Nationwide Tour for PLDT Home. The free concert series began in 2015 around Metro Manila, with 2016 targetting provincial shows. On April 10, Velasquez performed at SM Bacoor, and is scheduled to get back on the road for Cebu and Pampanga in July.
The Songbird held a total of five PLDT Home concerts last year, where she realized how she missed being very close to her audience. As such, even if the shows are set up in malls for free, Velasquez always gives her hundred percent at every performance, hitting the high notes she is known for, in song choices everyone enjoys.
“Even if it’s a free concert, it is still a concert. Like what I’ve said before, I missed singing so much [when I took a break from work], so I really give every performance my all. I always make sure that everyone will enjoy watching me onstage,” she added.
Asked what she enjoys about being close to fans when she performs, Velasquez replied, “I like seeing the expressions on their faces when I sing. It makes me feel I got the song’s message across to them, and it just makes me enjoy performing all the more,” she ended.
