She may be Asia’s Songbird, with countless accolades in music, movies and TV, but nowadays, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s top priority is being mom to three-year-old son Nate.
With her life an open book throughout her career, the public knows full well that Regine waited patiently to marry the right man in singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid when she was almost 40, and also to for their relationship to bear fruit.
It was therefore not surprising that when she had Nate in 2011, she immediately decided to take a hiatus from show business.
“When I became pregnant, my sisters and my friends told me my life was going to be different. I realized I had no idea what they were talking about. Not until I had Nate,” she said with the happiest of smiles at her Mother’s Day campaign launch for PLDT Home Telsets this week.
“Everything about my life changed completely. I have a totally different perspective now, a different outlook in life,” she declared with contagious enthusiasm.
With her son and their happy family, she considers every single day a blessing.
“He will turn four in November. How time flies! So far, so good. We are very, very happy with how things are with Nate. A lot of people tell us how behaved and good a kid Nate is. Hindi siya yung katulad ng ibang bata na sobrang malikot kahit nasa labas.
“He behaves well. He is not a spoiled brat because we are very conscious of that being an only son so far. He listens to us when we caution him. He remembers what we teach him. We couldn’t be prouder,” she beamed.
Despite her stardom, Regine, who was raised by a humble family in Bulacan, has both feet firmly on the ground, and thus, raises her son with her husband in a very traditional way.
“Ogie and I don’t employ the good cop-bad cop scheme in our parenting style. The only rule is that the ‘aggrieved’ parent should be the one to discipline the boy. So kung ako ang nagalit sa kanya over something he did, I will be the one to discipline him,” said the mom who abides by classic parenting rules.
She confessed that she never thought she had it in her to spank Nate, but she believes parents have to do it to instill discipline.
“I think I’ve spanked him three times already for throwing away things, like my iPad. We’ve learned a lot from our pastor in church on how to discipline a child. From ages zero to 12, our pastor said we us that we can instill discipline in them and break their developing pride by spanking. Past that age, it will be very hard already. If you spank them when they are older, you won’t be breaking their pride anymore, but their spirit,” Regine relayed. “I think our parenting style is working because Nate is a well-behaved boy and is truly a joy to be with even when we travel long distance.”
When asked what she considers the highlights of being a mother so far are, Regine was quick to say, “Everyday is a highlight! Every day there is something new with him. Either he says a new word or discovers something new that he shows us. That is why I am very conscious to be pre-sent in his life. I never want to miss out on anything. When I am working, we are in con-stant communication with his yaya. She sends me pictures of him when I am not with him.”
It is along this line that PLDT Home Telsets found a most opportune time to give tribute not only to the artistry of Regine Velasquez but also to the real values in life she holds dear.
“When it comes to voice, Regine Velasquez is top of mind,” said PLDT Home vice president and head of home marketing Gary Dujali to The Manila Times. “And because this entire service of PLDT has always been inspired by the moms’ needs for her family, she became all the more the perfect partner for this new campaign.”
With the landline at the core of today’s digital lifestyle requires at home—from internet connections, to security cameras, to on-demand platforms—PLDT decided to come up with new landline telephone sets featuring the Regine Series.
“There are four new telsets available now that come with the best voice call rates we’ve ever had that were inspired by moms—who are at the core of the home—and specifically, the artist and mother in Regine Velasquez,” explained the executive.
PLDT worked with a research company to come up with a new set of handsets whose look appeal to moms, and so far, the most popular among the four is a bright red iconic rotary phone that is, just like Regine, a classic.
“The set is perfect for her, she is an icon in music, and being red, represents her passion for her craft and motherhood,” continued Dujali.
In turn, Regine is happy with her connection with the PLDT Home team. “They have been very supportive of everything I do. They allow me stay connected to my own home and for a working mother like me, you know that keeping in close contact with our family is everything. Especially that I have a growing little boy who never fails to surprise me with his discoveries every single day,” she concluded.
