Gerry Velasquez, the father of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez, died at 1:39 p.m. on Monday of heart failure. He was 76.
The singer confirmed the death of her father on her Instagram account. “The leader of the band, Mang Gerry, joined his creator 1:39 p.m. today. Thank you for praying for him all [this]time that he has been fighting for his life. God bless you all,” she posted.
Accompanying the post was a photo of her with Mang Gerry during her 2010 wedding with actor and singer, Ogie Alcasid.
Velasquez revealed last year her father was hospitalized for almost three months after a major operation.
Condolences from close friends in show business poured in, including one from her best friend and singer Jaya.
Known as the mentor of Velasquez that inspired her to succeed in singing, the “Leader of the Band” by Dan Fogelberg was known to be Mang Gerry’s favorite song which the singer performed for her father at her 25th anniversary concert last year.
Mang Gerry was known for training his daughter’s voice by submerging her neck in the ocean. He was always known to be a stage father, but stayed away from the limelight throughout her career.
