TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 2 Director Laurefel Gabales said the street value of shabu in Cagayan Valley has increased from P4,000 to P5,000 per gram as a result of the intensified campaign against the illegal substance.
“[Because] of the government’s massive anti-illegal drug drive, dealers could hardly penetrate the local market while thousands of their runners or distributors have already surrendered to authorities and are being closely monitored,” according to Gabales.
In Region 2, the Philippine National Police (PNP) drugs monitoring center said the number of surrenderers reached 18,273.
Cagayan province has the highest number of surrenderers in the region with 7,528 followed by Isabela, 6,588; Nueva Vizcaya, 2,307; Santiago City (Isabela), 1,044; Quirino, 22; and Batanes, 34.
A series of operations resulted in the death of seven drug suspects–five in Cagayan and one each in Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya.
Meanwhile, the PDEA continues to coordinate with other government agencies, civil society organizations and private organizations to help provide livelihood opportunities for the drug surrenderers.
