TUGUEGARAO CITY: A recent survey conducted by the Population Commission (PopCom) showed that Cagayan Valley has the highest percentage in teenage pregnancy.
Cagayan Valley (Region 2), which comprises Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya, recorded 11.2 percent pregnant teenage girls ages 15 to 19.
Dr. Herita Ma-carubbo, PopCom-Re-gion 2 officer-in-charge, said Caga-yan Valley’s record surpassed that of the National Capi-tal Region, which only has 9.5 percent.
Macarubbo said teenagers are more susceptible to “conse-cutive pregnancies” if not well-guided and informed about res-ponsible parenthood and family planning.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao called for the cooperation of parents, commu-nity, church, schools and the media to curb the rising number of teenage pregnancy in Caga-yan Valley.
Msgr. Gerardo Aris-ton Perez, parish priest of Saint Peter Metro-politan Cathedral and Chairman of the Commission on Fami-ly and Life of the archdiocese here said “the case of teenage pregnancy is very much alarming.”
The Archbishop said the family or the parents can no longer solve teenage preg-nancy alone and there is a need for every-body’s participation.
He also stressed the need for parents to set boundaries but foster an open communi-cation among their children.
