ILOILO CITY: Authorities assured that no town or city in Western Visayas is on the list of election watchlist areas (EWAs), but the regional police chief, Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz, admitted they are monitoring at least 23 areas of interest.
Diaz said records at the local joint security control center showed that despite intense political rivalry in the municipalities, it is not enough to disrupt Monday’s synchronized elections.
The areas of interest are those where tension or confrontation among the supporters of some local candidates or where the presence of communist rebels has been reported. Harassment incidents were reported since last week, but these were evaluated cohesively before effecting the Comelec control over these areas.
In the province of Iloilo, the seven areas of interest are the towns of Oton, San Enrique, Alimodian, Concepcion, Estancia, San Dionisio and Bingawan, according to Iloilo provincial police chief, Senior Supt. Roderick Augustus Alba.
Capiz police chief, Senior Supt. Robert Rodriguez reported that incidents of intense political rivalry were in the municipalities of Mambusao, Sapian, Maayon, Tapaz and President Roxas.
