President Benigno Aquino 3rd joined the Filipino people in celebrating on Monday the 152nd birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio.
“We pay tribute to a hero revered for his boldness in defending our motherland and for his determination to edify himself in the ways of his time—Andres Bonifacio,” Aquino said in his message.
The President recalled that Bonifacio led ordinary Filipinos who had responded to the call of the motherland to unite and bring meaningful change to the country.
“More than a century after he led a revolution for independence, Bonifacio remains a vital source of inspiration for Filipinos. He has shown us how to rise above our circumstance and bring glory to our nation,” Aquino said.
The President expressed hopes that Bonifacio will continue to inspire the Filipino people to aspire for a progressive country.
“May we also find in ourselves the courage to bolster our people’s progress and contribute to realizing a more equitable and harmonious tomorrow,” he said.
Born in Tondo, Manila on November 30, 1863, Bonifacio is considered as the Father of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonization. He spearheaded the Katipunan movement in July 1892.
He was executed for alleged treason in Maragondon, Cavite on May 10, 1897.
