Sen. Antonio Trillanes 4th should resign from his Senate post if he fails to present evidence that Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr. bribed Court of Appeals (CA) justices to stop a suspension order against the city executive.
Rep. Abigail Binay of Makati City, House deputy majority leader, made the call on Wednesday in light of Trillanes’ exposé that CA Sixth Division magistrates Francisco Acosta and Jose Reyes received P50 million (P25 million each) in exchange for ruling in favor of staying Binay’s suspension.
The broker of the alleged deal, according to Trillanes, is a lawyer named Pancho Villaraza.
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales had slapped a six-month suspension against the Makati mayor in connection with the allegedly overpriced P2-billion Makati City Hall Building 2.
“Dapat magbitiw na si Sen. Trillanes dahil sa walang basehang alegasyon. Iyan ang tatak Trillanes, akusa ng akusa pero walang patunay at ebidensiya. Puro bintang at puro pagpapalapad ng papel [Senator Trillanes should resign from his post because of his baseless accusations. That is his mark, to accuse people despite absence of proof. He likes to malign people and hog the limelight],” Rep. Binay said.
“Sinisira niya ang isang institusyon para lamang maisulong ang kanyang sariling interes [He destroys the institution to advance his interests],” she added.
“Mag-imbestiga siya sa akin kung gusto niya. Haharapin ko siya. Hindi ako natatakot sa kanya [He can investigate me anytime he wants. I will face him. I don’t fear him],” the congresswoman said.
Trillanes had filed a resolution seeking a Senate probe of the alleged bribing of Acosta and Reyes but two lawmakers said the chamber cannot investigate, citing separation of powers.
Meanwhile, Rep. Binay’s allegedly anomalous use of her Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel will be investigated by Trillanes.
“I already ordered a research about [Abigail] Binay’s PDAF and I will present it in time,” the senator disclosed on Wednesday but he did not say if the Senate will inquire into the issue.
He did not provide figures on Binay’s PDAF that supposedly had gone to questionable projects and programs but hinted that millions in taxpayers’ money were spent.
Speaking to reporters also on Wednesday, Trillanes said Binay’s PDAF had been used in buying organic fertilizers for Makati City despite absence of agricultural areas in the city.
Binay, according to the senator, also gave allocations to various foundations with ties to the Binay family.
He said the scheme is similar to that hatched by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles except that of Binay sees her linking directly with beneficiary organizations.
Trillanes scored the Binays for supposedly being childish and always throwing empty challenges but could not even find the courage to attend Senate committee hearings involving Vice President Jejomar Binay, the congresswoman’s father.
