Resolve to prevent self-inflicted diseases with lifestyle change

ACCORDING to the study of BRIDGES (Bringing Research in Diabetes to Global Environments and Systems), a program of the International Diabetes Federation, the Philippines is one of the world’s emerging diabetes hotspots as it’s ranked among the Top 15 in the world for diabetes prevalence.

On the other hand, the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PSEDM) reported that an estimated 7.3 million people are afflicted with diabetes. What is alarming is a large unknown number of people are unaware they have the disease.

Unhealthy lifestyle is pointed as one of the main reasons for the growing number of people with diabetes.

Recognizing this problem, the Department of Health observes World Diabetes Day on November 14 to create awareness about this malady.

Healthway Medical continuously promote preventive tips for this self-inflicted disease—the Type 2 Diabetes which is the most common among the millions afflicted with the disease – especially the obese or overweight.

Healthier food intake, becoming more active, losing few extra pounds, eating whole grains, skipping fad diets, lessening sugar, carbohydrates and fats consumption could help in avoiding the serious complications diabetes brings to vital organs – such as damage to the liver, pancreas, kidneys and the heart.

If older than 45 and weight is normal or if younger than 45 and overweight – with one or more additional risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle or a family history of diabetes – one is advised to seek a physician’s help. Visit your Healthway Medical doctor at its seven mall-based clinics in Metro Manila.

In line with this, Healthway Medical, as part of its ongoing initiative to promote a healthier lifestyle, is encouraging all Filipinos of all ages to learn about the (S.E.E.D.) lifestyle campaign or the importance of quality – Sleep, Eating right, enough Exercise, and taking time to De-stress. SEED is under the umbrella of WOW (Wellness on Wheels) which aims to educate the community on the value of preventive health.

This program, according to Healthway Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Carmie de Leon, is part of the long-standing commitment of Healthway Medical in providing health and wellness to the public.
